Remembering Bob Mills, by John Long
Another good Marine has Returned to Base. Harry Bob went home on Sunday, October 3, 2021. Bob was a character, but first, last and always, Bob was a Marine.
Bob’s second tour of duty in Vietnam was with us in HMM-265 from May of 1966 through May of 1967. Part of his time was on the ground assigned as a Forward Air controller, the rest as a pilot on our CH-46s. His first VN tour was in UH-34s.
What I will remember him most for was his idea of having an HMM-265 reunion. That eventually evolved into the HMM-265 Veterans Association, Inc. After helping host the first couple of reunions in Pensacola in ’88 and ‘91, Bob was continuously active in the organization. In fact, he was still on the Board of Directors when he returned to base.
At our 2019 reunion in Branson, MO, Bob told me that he believed Branson would be his last Reunion. He was right. We will miss him in New Orleans in Nov. 2021. But I am sure there will be a few Harry Bob stories.
Semper Fi, Marine.
Rest Easy.
